Health Guidelines And Policy

Health & Medications

At Universal College, the health and well-being of our students are of utmost importance. We have established comprehensive health and medication policies to ensure that all students receive the necessary care and support during school hours. We ask for the cooperation of parents to adhere to these guidelines to maintain a safe and healthy environment for all.

Medical Information

  1. Health Records: Parents are required to submit a complete health record for their child at the time of admission. This should include information about allergies, chronic conditions, immunizations, and any other relevant medical history.
  2. Emergency Contact: It is essential that parents provide up-to-date emergency contact information, including phone numbers and addresses. Any changes to this information should be communicated to the school immediately.

Illness and Attendance

  1. When to Stay Home: Students who are ill should remain at home to recover fully and to prevent the spread of illness. Symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and severe cough are indicators that a student should not attend school.
  2. Notification: If a student is absent due to illness, parents should notify the school office by phone or email before the start of the school day. A note explaining the absence should be provided when the student returns to school.

Medications at School

  1. Medication Authorization: If a student needs to take medication during school hours, parents must complete a medication authorization form. This form should be signed by the parent and, if applicable, the prescribing physician.
  2. Medication Delivery: All medications, whether prescription or over-the-counter, must be delivered to the school office in their original containers with clear labeling. Medications should not be sent with the student to avoid any risk of improper use or administration.
  3. Administration of Medication: Medications will be administered by designated school personnel according to the instructions provided. A record of administration will be kept for each student.

Chronic Conditions and Special Health Needs

  1. Individual Health Plans: For students with chronic conditions or special health needs (e.g., asthma, diabetes, severe allergies), an Individual Health Plan (IHP) will be developed in collaboration with parents, healthcare providers, and school staff. This plan outlines the necessary accommodations and emergency procedures.
  2. Emergency Medications: Students requiring emergency medications, such as inhalers or EpiPens, should have these readily available at school. Parents must ensure that these medications are within their expiration date and provide any necessary training to school staff.

Health and Wellness Programs

  1. Routine Health Screenings: The school conducts routine health screenings (e.g., vision, hearing, dental) at various grade levels. Parents will be informed in advance and may opt out if they wish.
  2. Counseling Services: Our school offers counseling services to support the mental and emotional well-being of students. Parents can refer their child for counseling or seek advice on related concerns.

Accidents and Emergencies

  1. First Aid: Basic first aid will be administered on-site by trained personnel for minor injuries. Parents will be notified of any significant injuries or illnesses that occur during school hours.
  2. Emergency Procedures: In the event of a serious medical emergency, the school will contact emergency services first and then notify the parents. It is crucial that parents ensure their emergency contact information is always current.

Preventive Measures

  1. Hygiene Education: The school emphasizes the importance of good hygiene practices, such as regular handwashing and proper cough etiquette, to prevent the spread of illness.
  2. Immunizations: Parents are encouraged to keep their child’s immunizations up to date in accordance with public health recommendations.

By following these health and medication guidelines, parents help us create a safe and nurturing environment where students can thrive both academically and physically. If you have any questions or need further information regarding our health policies, please contact the school health office. We appreciate your cooperation and commitment to your child’s well-being.
